This is the story Promise to live Holistically.
I began eating a Vegan diet late fall 2013. Since then, my whole body and lifestyle has shifted. My family is from Jamaica, so transitioning into a meat-free & diary-free diet meant letting go of a lot of my culture's main meals and delicacies. It was difficult, not only because I had to let go of some foods that I loved, but because I went through a shift in how I relate during social gatherings and all of my memories connected to my favorite foods;
...Drinking ice-cold sugary Snapples that my dad would bring home
...Smokey Jerk chicken at family cook-outs
...Strawberry Shortcakes when the ice cream truck rolled by
As I was in the process of changing my diet, all of these memories and more came back to me. At times I felt like I would be missing out, cutting myself off from my personal traditions. In moments like these, I would try to re-remember why I am dedicated to this lifestyle change.
1. My body has never felt this good and light and my mind has never felt this clear.
2. I am an adult now, and this transition will strengthen my as I experience the body changes that come with womanhood.
3. I am dedicated to a lifestyle that is more kind to nature: animals and plants
Also, I have the opportunity to relate to food in a whole new way.
This process has been so interconnected to my hair journey. At the same time as I was transitioning, I did a 2 inch trim to remove some dyed and dead ends that I was holding onto. 2 inches may not seem like much, but it was a lot to me considering the "Hiccups in My Hair Growth Journey" that I have experienced since my big chop.
I was also still in the process of learning as I was changing my diet. I was learning how to feel my body intuitively; to know when it was asking for more iron, protein or vitamins.
My hair was definitely responding to my diet change. My hair seemed to be growing at a slower rate due do the fact that I was still learning how to have a balanced diet and enough calories each day.
Even now, I still have sugar cravings, I still may want some Popeye's biscuits. My guilty pleasures are a large side of french fries from a local grille and dark chocolate bars (both are vegan!). But I've realized that these cravings is my body asking for NUTRIENTS. The vitamins and minerals that keep our bodies strong and in-tune.
So, now, my focus is on making sure my body is nourished.
- I take daily vitamins/minerals
- drink green juices and smoothies, and
- consume A LOT of water.
As my body assimilates to the positive changes I have made, I am sure that I will see the impact on the health of my hair: its strength, its growth rate, and its texture.
Balancing my diet is my first step in creating a Holistic Health regimen that I know will impact my health journey. Take your vitamins and live well!
